| São estudadas as espécies da família Bignoniaceae que ocorrem na Restinga de Maricá, cuja flora se encontra ameaçada devido a diversas interferências que vêm alterando sua composição florística e vegetacional. A família está representada nesta área por sete gêneros e onze espécies, das quais seis são ocorrências novas para o local. O trabalho inclui a descrição da área de estudo em seus distintos gradientes, chaves analíticas para gêneros e espécies, descrições resumidas para as espécies, denominação popular, distribuição geográfica, material examinado e observações taxonômicas e de campo. |

| The Theoretical and Experimental Tomography in the Sea Experiment (THETIS 1) took place in the Gulf of Lion to observe the evolution of the temperature field and the process of deep convection during the 1991-1992 winter. The temperature measurements consist, of moored sensors, conductivity-temperature-depth and expendable bathythermograph surveys, ana acoustic tomography. Because of this diverse data set and since the field evolves rather fast, the analysis uses a unified framework, based on estimation theory and implementing a Kalman filter. | A hedonic cost function is used to isolate the operation and maintenance costs for water treatments. For small systems, costs are substantial for some technologies, but not for others. When regional differences in input costs are accounted for, small systems located in rural areas may have a cost advantage over similar systems closer to urban centers; however, costs of water treatment to meet Safe Drinking Water Act amendments may still be substantial. |

| An energy analysis of the Fine Resolution Antarctic Model (FRAM) reveals the instability processes in the model. The main source of time-mean kinetic energy is the wind stress and the main sink is transfer to mean potential energy. The wind forcing thus helps maintain the density structure. Transient motions result from internal instabilities of the Bow rather than seasonal variations of the forcing. Baroclinic instability is found to be an important mechanism in FRAM. The highest values of available potential energy are found in the western boundary regions as well as in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) region. | A formula is derived to indicate the marginal returns to nonprice promotion for a competitive industry that promotes in both the domestic and the export market and receives a subsidy for export promotion. Private returns to export promotion are an increasing function of the export promotion elasticity, the export share, and the promotion subsidy and a decreasing function of the domestic supply elasticity, the absolute values of the domestic and export demand elasticities, and opportunity cost. | A recessive mutant cell line, B7, which is partially responsive to both interferon (IFN)-<FONT FACE="Symbol"> a</font> and IFN-<FONT FACE="Symbol">g</font> is described. B7 was FACS sorted from a cellular pool, which was obtained from the parental cell line 2C4, after several rounds of mutagenesis. The partial responsiveness to IFN was observed both in terms of expression of cell surface markers (CD2, class I and II HLAs) and mRNA expression of IFN-stimulated genes (9-27; 6-16; 2'-5' OAS; GBP and HLA-DRa). | This paper attempts to provide a balanced view of the neoclassical economists' perspective on trade liberalization, with an emphasis on the agricultural sector. I review the basic arguments in favor of competitive markets in general and free trade in particular. These arguments are based on restrictive assumptions which often fail to hold. Under more realistic assumptions, the arguments in favor of free trade are invalid. Economists remain skeptical of the benefits of trade restrictions, but this is a nuanced judgment, rather than a theoretical certainty. I describe a number of situations where market failures imply that trade restrictions can improve efficiency. |
